How to change the fuel filter?

We need the fuel filters to keep water, dirt and metal parts from entering the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine and keep the car running normally.

To prevent this from happening, the gasoline filter is designed to clean the fuel even before those particles reached important components.

However, this component should be changed regularly or at least serviced. That is to say, if you are travelling in areas that are heavily polluted, you should pack at least one or two spare parts in your luggage.

Petrol deliveries are not as strictly controlled everywhere as here, and it has even been said that unsuspecting adventurers were sold petrol that had been spilt with water or used oil. Unless you own an absolutely bulletproof vehicle, a good gasoline filter is essential on such trips.

Is it able to change the fuel filter by yourself?

Different procedures need to be taken depending on the car models. But what if you are at the end of the world and the engine suddenly stutters or no longer pulls as it should be? Can you take the replacement of the gasoline filter into your own hands?

Generally, yes. However, if you are getting a divorce after assembling an Ikea shelf together and have a nervous breakdown, you should not change the gasoline filter yourself as a manual skill is required.

In addition, you can hardly give a general instruction because there are a variety of different systems. Many gasoline filters are fixed with counter-rotating hexagon nuts, and others rely on a manufacturer-specific system for which a special tool is required. Others are simply attached with hose clamps.

Tips on changing the fuel filter yourself

If you insist on changing your gasoline filter yourself or just don’t have other choices, we prepare a few tips for you:

First, do this only in a safe environment. If you are on the highway, you should try to pull over your car to the safety zone. If it’s the wild you are talking about, then you better park your car somewhere more “stable” for operating the procedure.

Then you should make sure that the tank is almost empty before changing the gasoline filter. This prevents litres of petrol from being poured into the desert floor.

Pull the fuse for the gasoline pump before you start. When you’re done, plug the fuse back in, turn the ignition on for a few seconds, and then turn it off before you start the engine. That should turn the injection pump back on and deliver enough petrol to the engine to start it easily.

Lastly, run the engine and check again if the fuel lines you just reattached are also tight. If everything is fine, you are now good to go!
